Diamond Stud Earrings get a Makeover

Anu’s devoted husband gave her these beautiful diamond solitaire earrings on a special anniversary. Although she appreciated the sentiment; she did not enjoy wearing them and was sure she wanted something more her style (well, bigger). I had the perfect solution to her problem.

It is not everyone’s first thought to expand on already owned pieces in this way. Repurposing involves looking at the jewelry and finding its soul. That comes not only from the gems themselves, but the wearer. How will this piece fit into their life now and in their future. What I did first is have the solitaires reset into a modern 3 prong ‘martini’ setting so that they sat flush on her ears, making them look bigger. Then, I sketched up options to make an earring jacket that would dress up these very same studs and give them more presence. These are the sketches I drew for Anu to choose from. They are all slightly different from one another but that difference is significant in the final design.  Doing this, really helps the client see my vision of the new piece.

Voila! For a fraction of the cost of purchasing new studs; I was able to repurpose them to become a wearable piece that is now a wardrobe staple and simultaneously convert them into future heirlooms so that she can proudly pass them on to her little girl.
